When I reviewed Goat Simulator 3 way back in the mists of time (well, November 2022 actually), I really enjoyed what was on offer, especially when taking it in with other friends to fully embrace the nonsense. But now we’re here today to talk about the Multiverse of Nonsense expansion that has launched.Â
This expansion promises to bring an entirely new range of experiences to the base game of Goat Sim 3, with all new areas to explore and various new things to find. So, is the time ripe for some more nonsense, or are we all goated out?
The presentation of Goat Simulator 3 – Multiverse of Nonsense is where we shall touch down first, and here the news is largely good – but not entirely. We’ll start with the good though and the new area that we have to play with is not only a decent size, but is split into three discrete zones, each with its own distinct look and personality. There are a number of tasks to find and fulfil as we explore too, and these are imaginative and interesting. I’ll speak more about these further into the review, but for now, all looks pretty good.
However, there are now problems with not only the camera, which can go into super freak out mode when you get into tight spaces, but also with the scenery – I’ve fallen through floors, jumped through walls and got stuck half way through doors, and this isn’t something I remember happening all too often in the base game. Thankfully the sound is all as you’d expect, with bone crunching impacts as your goat rag dolls through the air to an inevitable impact. Hell, even the horns on the cars and trucks are great fun to play with.
All in all, Multiverse of Nonsense has the feel of the original Goat Simulator – look past the issues and there will still be a good game to be had, but it isn’t as polished as the main game.Â
Story? Well, yes, there is one of those, and as you’d expect, it is pretty much nonsense. After the longest intro to a DLC I’ve ever sat through (and as if to recognise the fact, there is an achievement for watching the whole thing!), our goat is tasked with helping with some scientific experiments. What could possibly go wrong? Well, it goes about as well as you’d expect, as we are transported to a broken dimension, tasked with putting the world to rights, almost exactly. And how do we do this? By causing instability, making a new dimensional gateway appear, and then by finding the gems that are needed for an Instability Tiara, that looks nothing like an Infinity Gauntlet, honest.
With the world at our hooves, what will we find in this DLC? Well, as I mentioned – three separate zones that go to make up a new area to explore. These areas are Gooftown, a town that is inhabited by cartoon style characters, from the old style of cartoons, complete with cartoon cars that look like something ripped straight out of Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The second area is a town that is inhabited by goats who walk upright on their hind legs, and keep humans as pets. One of the memorable missions in this place is having to take one of the pet humans for a walk, which certainly turns out interesting! Finally, there is an area that seems to be an ancient Greek style zone, with a Trojan goat to use and many more secrets to find. Each area looks and feels different from the others, and there is certainly much to get on with in each.Â
There are a number of video game related Easter eggs to find laced through the Multiverse of Nonsense too, like currants in a fruit cake. I’m not going to list them all, as part of the fun is finding – and recognising – them for what they are. But my favourite I will mention – an homage to Rain on Your Parade, one of my favourite indie games ever. Seeing this in the expansion made me have a wry smile and there are loads more to find, so get out there and start looking!
The basic gameplay is very much the same as the game it ever was, but Multiverse of Nonsense feels a bit more focussed on the completion of various missions that are dotted about, and this is where another concern raises its head. You see, the base game, and the other games beforehand, were at their best when you were just messing about, being stupid and having fun. Focussing on missions as a means of moving forwards does dilute the nonsense, ironically enough.
Goat Simulator 3 – Multiverse of Nonsense isn’t massively long either, and while it will take a decent amount of time to get all the new cosmetic items that are available, I do have concerns about the overall longevity. Aside from that though, you shouldn’t turn down the opportunity to embark on more nonsense with Goat Simulator 3.
