The original Bioshock is 15 years old, let that sink in for a minute. System Shock 2 is even older at 23 years old, having released in 1999. Both were helmed by Ken Levine who, after the release of Bioshock Infinite (itself turning ten years old in 2023) has been quietly beavering away on something. That something was announced at The Game Awards 2022. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Judas.
It all looks very Bioshock still, doesn’t it?
Fans will remember the Bioshock games. The first two are sent underwater in the city of Rapture decades after it was abandoned. The third game, Bioshock Infinite, did the exact opposite and was set in a city in the clouds called Columbia.
In Judas, you play as Judas. Trapped on a starship that is literally crumbling away, Judas has a big choice to make. Will you work together with others on the ship to fix your mistakes, or just leave it and let it burn?
“We founded Ghost Story Games to build upon the legacy of System Shock 2, BioShock, and BioShock Infinite,” said Ken Levine, President & Creative Director. “With Judas, we’ve created an entirely new world and set of characters while exploring different approaches to single-player, narrative first-person shooters.”
Judas looks to retain a lot of Bioshock tropes. It is a first-person shooter, there will be powers and abilities shot from the protagonists’ hands and there are a weird and colourful cast of characters. But that is all we really have to go on for now.
Between the original Bioshock games we had Big Daddies, Handymen, Motorised Patriots, Boys of Silence and more. So far, in Judas, we have seen a short robot with liquid inside it and a larger robotic dog. Are these baddies, or is something more sinister still being held back?
Right now, we don’t have a date or anything for Judas. All we know is that it will be launching on Xbox Series X|S, PS5 and PC at some point. Most other games at The Game Awards had release windows if they were releasing in 2023. I suspect Judas is going to be 2024 at the earliest. There isn’t even an Xbox Store link yet, but you can wishlist on Steam here.
But even this announcement trailer is enough to get tongues wagging. Just hearing Ken Levine’s name again is enough for me, and Judas will be a day one purchase. Whenever that is.
